Meet Dexter 💙
Mini Blue Merle | Walks on Leash | Crate Training in Progress

Dexter’s story starts the way too many do.

He and another dog, Ian Morgan, were abandoned when their owner was evicted — simply left behind. With a serious winter storm moving in and no access to food or shelter, these boys were on their own. Cold. Hungry. Forgotten.

We scooped them up before the storm hit.

Despite everything, Dexter is still here. Still trying. Still learning that the world can be safe.

What we first thought was a puppy turned out to be a young adult who’s just had a rough start. He’s currently underweight, but he’s eating well, staying hydrated, and already beginning to fill out. His body is catching up now that he doesn’t have to fight to survive.

Dexter is people-friendly and enjoys affection once he’s had a little time to warm up. He’s communicative and very clear about his boundaries. When he feels overwhelmed, he may show his teeth as a “please don’t push me” signal — this is communication, not aggression. He’s learned he has to advocate for himself, and we respect that. With structure and trust, he relaxes beautifully.

He has shown some mild resource guarding with toys, which is being monitored and managed. This is not uncommon for dogs who have experienced scarcity.

However, he and Ian, are not bonded and will do best in separate homes where they can individually decompress and build confidence.

Dexter walks on a leash but does pull, so continued leash training will be important. He’s still warming up to the crate but will go in with gentle encouragement (and treats). He’s been pottying outside with no accidents — gold star behavior ⭐️

He has not yet been tested with children or cats, and as he continues to decompress, we expect more of his personality to unfold.

Dexter is looking for a patient, understanding home that appreciates a dog who communicates clearly, thrives with structure, and simply wants to feel secure again.

He survived being left behind in the cold.

Now he just needs someone who won’t ever leave him again. 💙
